Nora Avery arrived home on her Predatech Cycler just as the sun was rising. It had been a long night. The next night would be even longer. Sleep wouldn’t come easy, but she would need to get some.

She lived in what was commonly referred to as a paddyshack in the outlands. It was a multi-residence building, similar to apartment complexes in the cities, except that paddyshacks typically had communal showers and eateries. And most all the residents were farmers of rice, corn, or potatoes. Nora herself had been a farm laborer before the fall of the Freedom Coalition. Her father, Dean, had died during the Bluecoat raids. And Bonnie, who’d once been her lover and had worked with her on the farms, had been savagely beaten and arrested. Somehow, Nora had slipped through the cracks. She thought surely she’d be caught when attempting to hire on at the CDP. But Warden Thorne had her weaknesses, and Nora Avery, as Sister Willow could attest, was skilled in the ways of the flesh.

She disembarked the Cycler and activated the electric shock anti-theft feature and entered the paddyshack, passing through the eatery, where farmhands and children snacked at the community table, and climbed the stone stairs to her loft. Entering her one room abode, Nora tossed her keys on the small desk beside her bed and opened the mini fridge that sat atop it and took out a glass bottle of milk. She drank it all, then sat the glass outside her door to be refilled the next morning.

She unzipped and removed the jumpsuit she wore when on her Cycler, then removed her undergarments. Then she threw herself on her narrow bed and thought of Willow. She thought of how Willow had touched her and kissed. She’d taken Willow’s innocence. Did Willow regret their actions? Nora hoped not, but wouldn’t be surprised if she did. Vows were a serious thing, after all.

Would either of them survive the next twenty-four hours so they could discuss it? As prepared as she was, having planned this escape for weeks now, and with the recent addition of Father Magnus as an ally with a thumper and fire power, Nora still felt that the break-out could easily be a colossal failure. The guards within the prison walls may only be armed with electric batons, cybernetic upgrades, and mostly blunt objects, but the guards around the perimeter, atop the curtain walls and in the towers, were more heavily armed than Magnus could ever hope to be. They had sniper rifles, spider drones, glue-zookas that could probably stop Magnus’s thumper in its tracks, and even, so Nora had heard, plasma rockets. All funded by the Bluecoats to keep their political prisoners where they belonged. Tonight would be all-out war.

As Nora laid in her bed trying to ease her mind into sleep, Willow was being once more ushered to the showers. This time, there were no fellow nuns with her. They’d all disappeared in the last day; Mother Superior to the place the inmates called the hole and the rest to see the doctor, never to return.
